A
basement window is the ideal way to add light to below ground
living spaces. Because most of the egress basement windows are sub-terrain,
you probably don’t
want to cover them with heavy window treatments that make the basement
even darker. You can however dress up a basement egress window to make
a basement room look just as nice as any other in the house.
Egress Window
Construction
Today’s egress
windows are manufactured to government regulations
and codes. This usually means that the window must open and be
large enough for an adult to crawl through in case of fire. Many
older homes with basements have tiny windows that do no open. If
there is a bulk head or other secondary exit from the room, homeowners
usually do not need to worry about fire regulations.
Egress takes
safety into account but also aesthetics. Not only does the larger
basement window brighten the interior of the space, but it allows
for better irrigation away from the foundation of the house by
its construction and installation.
When installing
a basement egress window, a large well is dug on the exterior of
the home. This is lined with weather proof and critter resistant
plastic or vinyl mouldings that should last a lifetime. The inside
area should be free of debris and left as a possible exit in case
of an emergency. These modern windows also come in a vinyl window
option that never needs painting and is insulated enough on its
own that you won’t need to worry about storm
window repair again.
Dressing up Egress Basement Windows
To make a basement
room look well decorated there are many window treatments that
can be used that won’t block out light.
The only time you may want light blocking and privacy in your
window treatments is if the room is used as a basement bedroom
or for watching television. Blinds and shades can be made to
fit basement replacement windows too for privacy, and
then topped with decorative valances. You can also find decorative
rods and finials to use with a basement egress window.
