Replacement vinyl windows
are one of the most effective steps a homeowner can take in reducing
energy costs in their home. The vinyl windows are more efficient in
sealing off the elements and replacement vinyl windows are very low
maintenance.
Vinyl windows are used in many new homes because they are energy
conscious and easy to maintain and clean. The cost of replacement
vinyl windows is easily recovered in energy savings and worth the
investment for an older home without good insulation around the windows.
To clean these storm proof windows, most double hung styles are
designed to tilt inward. That means second story windows can be cleaned
inside and out from inside the home. No ladders are needed at all.
The vinyl window protection is maintenance free in that it will never
chip, peal or fade. It will never need painting like wooden windows
and will never rot or warp due to moisture or changes in temperature.
So when you replace a window of wood with a vinyl window, you get
a storm proof, even hurricane protection like no other wood
window can provide.
How to replace
a window
To replace a window, it can be a do-if-yourself job for the more
experienced homeowner. Most people opt to have the window replacement
competed by a professional staff. The cost is often included in the
cost of the replacement vinyl windows and discounts are often given
for replacing several windows at one time. If you do it yourself,
be sure to have some help, especially on second story installation.
The first step
to replace a window is to remove the old one. All trims need to
be removed and any nails or screws holding the window into the
opening. Once that is complete, have one person push from the outside,
while the person on the inside catches the window. Then remove
and debris from the opening, so that the new window has a clean,
flush surface to go against. In older homes it may be necessary
to shim or put a small piece of wood trim in place so the new window
can be hung level and plumb. The vinyl window will come with all
of the necessary hardware to install it in the opening. Once you’ve
attached everything and then re-installed the trim, you are
ready to enjoy the low-cost, maintenance free replacement vinyl
windows.
